The Gallia building

This quayside edifice set on the Ill was built in 1885 by two Berlin architects, Heinrich Kayser (1842-1917) and Karl von Grossheim (1841-1911). It once housed the headquarters of an insurance company from Hamburg, Germania (the building’s original name). With its red-brick facing, turrets and gables, the building is typical of the Renaissance Revival style found in most large towns in northern Germany. After the First World War and the return of Alsace to France, the building was renamed “Gallia”. In 1928, the property was given over to students and housed accommodation and a university cafeteria1.
