Ancient Boecklinsau mansion

Dating from 1598, this magnificent Renaissance building was the home of Philipp Dietrich Böcklin von Böcklinsau, Stettmeister of Strasbourg (representative of the nobility on the city’s government) between 1595 and 1613. Subsequent residents included the Berstett, Wurmser de Vendenheim and Wangen de Geroldseck families. From 1685 to 1789, the private mansion housed the Nobility Directorate of Lower Alsace. From 1795 it housed a café then from 1910 to 1921 the restaurant Zum Ritter. In 1921, the property was transferred to the Society of St Vincent de Paul. Three years later it was acquired by the Brothers of Matzenheim. Father Médard opened a Catholic student residence here in 19251.
