The churches of St. Peter the Older

Tradition has it that Strasbourg’s first cathedral was built on this site, by St. Amand in the 4th century. The church itself was built in the late 14th century for the canons of Hanau-Rhinau. In 1529, the church joined the Reformation movement, but fell victim to the first Protestant iconoclasm. In 1683, a royal decree restored the choir to Catholic worship. A new church was built perpendicularly to the first one to accommodate the increasing number of Catholic worshippers and was consecrated in 1871. Two bays of the nave and the doorway were removed as a result of the Grande Percée urban development plan. The doorway was rebuilt between 1919 and 19231
