The palais du Gouverneur militaire (the Military governer’s Residence)

The Hôtel Gayot–Deux-Ponts was the last of the Royal residences to be built in Strasbourg in the 18th century. The building was completed in 1755 and occupied by the two Gayot brothers, the older of whom, François-Marie, was Royal moneylender to King Louis XV. The mansion was purchased in 1770 by the Deux-Ponts family. Prince Maximilian Joseph commissioned the magnificent decorations, making it one of the finest of all Strasbourg mansions. After the French Revolution, it became the residence of the military governor of Strasbourg. King Ludwig I of Bavaria was born there on 25 August 17861.
