Rathsamhausen Mansion

This Renaissance-style edifice dates from the 16th century, as indicated by the year 1587 engraved in the interior courtyard. Four structures are arranged around a square courtyard with two corner towers housing spiral staircases. On the left, arcades are supported by Tuscan columns. In 1710, Jacob Samson de Rathsamhausen installed his Kunstkabinet, a cabinet of precious objects comprising some 30,000 engravings, coins, medals, curiosities of natural history and paintings, all presented in a printed catalogue. The building was also updated in this period: the entrance, for example, was enlarged wide enough for a carriage drawn by six horses to fit through1
